Why have a "Winter Camp"? The inspiration behind Camp Hemsworth 👇

Full transparency, we cannot claim credit for this idea. This request came from the ladies who attended our very first summer camp with us! However the more we thought about it, and the more experience we gained by hosting our second Camp Hemsworth this past summer made us realise what an incredible weekend it could be.

I have memories of winter school holiday Brownie and Girl Guide camps at Craycroft in Christchurch where you wrapped damper around a stick to toast over the camp fire, and tried cozy crafts in the main hall and every night finished with a weak milo that was always too hot.

I also know that while the estate is beautiful in spring and summer, there's something deeply uplifting about a daytime cozy fire, and making the effort to do something different when all you want to do is hibernate.

Plus, my love language is cooking, and there's only so many hearty french dishes you can feed people in the summer (boeuf bourguignon really only is well received in the heart of winter when the smells have been wafting down the hallway for hours).

I imagine this winter-themed "Camp" with cozy suites topped with thick blankets, a crisp walk in the frost, mulled wine and movies in the drawing room and perhaps that ever-classic camp fire if weather permits will help rewire some of the winter brain chemistry that can be really challenging to combat.

Yve, our elderly 16 year old cat has finished her

Yve, our elderly 16 year old cat has finished her retirement here at Hemsworth Estate 💔

She marched into Rebecca's mum Margie's life and has strutted her stuff for the whole of her life, charming everyone she meets and doing it with flair 🐈‍⬛

She was an active bird and mouse catcher, bringing generous "birthday presents" and snacks at her home in Christchurch. Never allowing a dog to pass a doorway without her permission and most importantly, convincing Jema that she was the true love of her life 🥰

When she moved with us down to Hemsworth Estate, she promptly decided to retire, settling into new hobbies of bird watching and chief meal time reminder and generally living her best life in expanded gardens and new adventures.

She became an older sister to Willow, grudgingly at first and resigned to be gruff but affectionate in the end and even welcomed Margot surprisingly well. 🐶

The past two weeks have been hard ones as her quality of life has declined rapidly however she has had a wonderful life and we're glad she's no longer in pain. We imagine she's curled up on Margie's lap and occasionally terrorizing Mozart by standing right by the door. 🐾🌈🐈‍⬛

Our first ever ❄ winter-camp ❄ is here 🙌 (we've hosted two summer camps but this is our first winter edition).

❄ A winter weekend escape to the countryside, in a historic 4th generation, family owned estate just one hour form Christchurch and 10 minutes from Ashburton.

🗓 Dates: 3rd to 5th July 2026
🗝 Spots: 6 in total, but we only have 3 left!

🎟 What's included:
Everything! Accomodation, all meals from Fridays cocktail hour and dinner to Sunday's farewell brunch, cozy low-stakes activities and their supplies, a High Tea for Saturday's luncheon and all your drinks - wine and non alcoholic options all included, plus this is an exclusive weekend getaway you can't experience anywhere else in New Zealand.

Rebecca will be cooking up a feast, Jema will be pouring the drinks, cozy up in front of the fire in the drawing room, nestle into a blanket in your suite with a book or take a frosty walk around the grounds in your gummies. This is a choose-your-own-pace adventure.

Calling all women who love any excuse to dress up and dream of escaping to country manor with your girls 🙋‍♀️ ok good, we're all here? We're treating the ladies who attend our Winter Camp to cocktails and canapes in the drawing room followed by a 3-course dinner. And we need to pick two!

Rebecca's current ideas include...

Think french 75s with gougeres, french onion soup starters, and chocolate mousse

🍷Everything Wine
Start with mulled wine as an aperitif, followed by a wine themed menu including beouf Bourguignon, and red wine poached pears

👑 English Country Manor
G&Ts to start, followed by a proper country roast dinner

🎄Mid Winter Christmas
Holiday spritzes followed by the glazed ham and all the trimmings you can imagine.
