Your country escape is just one hour south of Christchurch, and 10 minutes from Ashburton nestled in the heart of the Mid-Canterbury Countryside.

Arrive through white gates and down a gravel drive bordered by a canopy of 100 year-old trees to unveil an English cottage garden surrounding the 1911 Edwardian Homestead. 

Step through the green door, and you’ll be transported back in time. Relax in two spacious suites equipped with king-sized beds and ensuites. Tour the surrounding gardens and heritage orchard. You might even meet friendly farm animals, and feed them treats! As the afternoon wanes, enjoy an aperitif in the chandelier-lit Drawing Room with wood fire roaring, or while watching the sunset on the veranda.

You’ll have access to a full kitchen straight out of a Nancy Myers fantasy. Cook up a feast to enjoy in the intimate dining room complete with a piano for any musically talented guests or simply order takeout and relax!

Eating and Drinking

The Country Escape is self-catering. Just bring your own food, and cook meals using the oven, induction stove, microwave, pots, pans and utensils provided. Pantry staples and artesian breakfast supplies are provided.

The nearest stores for stocking up on food and supplies are the supermarkets and farmer’s market on a Saturday morning only 10 minutes away.

The Country Escape is your moment to try out novel experiences in your country-life fantasy. Try feeding farm animals, teach yourself how to play the piano, or enjoy a good soak in the claw foot bath.
There’s also all the modern conveniences of a Chromecast TV, Wifi, DVD Player, and Stereo. Plus many books and board games to enjoy.
For those who wish to explore further afield, Ashburton features plenty of museums, walking tracks and cultural attractions to explore – all 10-30 minutes drive away.

Meet your hosts

Rebecca, Jema (and Willow the puppy) are fourth generation custodians of Rebecca’s family-owned farm. Gently restored in preparation for welcoming the public, now the couple host weddings, events and guests in the Homestead year round.

For almost 100 years Hemsworth Estate has been a family home of celebration from birthday parties to weddings, curating special memories almost as easily as its rare and precious items.

Rebecca and Jema are now dedicated to providing relaxed, professional hosting making sure you feel at ease.

When they’re not hosting, you’ll find Jema out in the workshop bringing projects to life or in the farm yard, taming barn cats. You’ll find Rebecca in the kitchen preserving produce fresh from the farm, or researching new ideas for events to host.

Everything about our stay was perfect. From the beautiful bedroom all the way through to the perfect breakfast. We could not have expected more. The property is a botanical treasure with a grand garden. The home is a fine example of Arts & Crafts architecture. Just a wonderful experience with our hosts welcoming us with charm and generous hospitality. There was excellent local information provided to enhance our stay. We would unhesitatingly recommend this property when in this part of New Zealand.

Relaxing Night in Old Fashioned Charm

We stayed a Saturday night at Hemsworth Estate to get away from everything. The house is an old family homestead and is filled with period features and ornaments. It bought back memories of staying with grandparents as young children. On arrival we enjoyed a hot drink sitting in the lounge in the sunny window seat. Then the host organised a platter for us which we enjoyed with lovely NZ wines in front of the fire. The bedroom has a well appointed ensuite. The room was warm and the bed so comfortable. Breakfast included cereal, fresh fruit and yoghurt as well as the european breads, meats and cheeses (and hot danish pastries). We had a lovely relaxing time with lots of great conversation with Margie the Host. The grounds are extensive and it would be a beautiful spot for a wedding reception. We note that they also do high teas on request. Would recommend Hemsworth Estate for a romantic getaway.

Quiet, peaceful, and highly recommended

Quiet, peaceful, lovely grounds, and only 8 minutes to Ashburton. Only 30 minutes to Mt. Somer hiking. House and rooms have all been recently renovated and are beautiful. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was outstanding. Rebecca and Jemma were lovely hosts. Highly recommend over staying in Ashburton given all of the above.

While no other guests will be staying in the homestead during your stay, the following are also resident on the property:

The Country Escape offer is only available when no other events are held for the public. 

A 15% fee is charged upon booking your stay, and the remainder is due 1 week beforehand, automatically charged to the credit card on file unless alternative arrangements are made ahead of time. 

Cancellations and Refunds:

  • Cancellations made 1 month or more in advance of arrival date = Full deposit refund
  • Cancellation made 7 days or more of arrival date = No refund for deposit but no charge for the remainder owning.
  • Cancellation made within 6 days of arrival date = No refund issued, full amount of booking due.
